Asbestos Medical
We have Asbestos HSE Appointed Doctors who undertake Asbestos Medicals. Asbestos work is categorised into two areas, licensed work and Notifiable Non licensed work.
Licensed Asbestos Medical
Licensed asbestos work is carried out by HSE licensed contractors and they must have a medical assessment with an HSE Appointed Doctor. These companies and self-employed individuals are subject to regulation and inspection by the HSE
This medical is suitable for direct work (it involves greater potential for exposure to asbestos and is required after every couple of years), it can include:
- building demolition
- asbestos removal
- asbestos coatings
- asbestos insulation
- asbestos insulating boards
Work with asbestos is regulated by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR), this places a duty of care on employers to maintain a health record for employees who are involved in “licensed work” with asbestos. If you are self-employed and work directly with asbestos, you are responsible for organising your own asbestos medical.
Please remember that every medical examination for licensed asbestos work, must be undertaken by a Doctor who has been appointed by the HSE and must be carried out every 2 years.
Non-Licensed Asbestos Medical
Non Licensed Asbestos Medicals are carried out every three years, this is for employees who might come in contact with Asbestos unknowingly. Mostly the occupations that need this are those working on garage and ceiling repair, with paint, and at construction sites.
Examples of notifiable non-licensed work include:
- the removal and or maintenance of asbestos cement products on roof sheeting
- tiles and rainwater goods
- drilling of textured decorative coatings for installation of fixtures/fittings
- painting/repainting Asbestos Insulating board (AIB) that is in good condition
From 2015, any new workers carrying out notifiable non-licensed work for the first time are required to have a medical examination before they can start their work, and then every 3 years thereafter.
ASBESTOS-RELATED DISEASES:
Asbestos exposure can be responsible for a number of conditions that can be severe and even fatal. The 4 main diseases are:
- Mesothelioma, a form of cancer mainly affecting the lining of the lungs.
- Asbestos related lung cancer
- Asbestosis, a non malignant scarring of the lung tissue
- Non-malignant pleural disease affecting the outer lining of the lung.

“Exposure to asbestos is reportable under RIDDOR when a work activity causes the accidental release or escape of asbestos fibres into the air in a quantity sufficient to cause damage to the health of any person.” Source HSE.

All Asbestos Medicals consist of :
- a medical questionnaire
- a lung function test by an approved HSE Doctor.
We are often asked if a chest x-ray is needed, these are very rarely done during medical surveillance. If symptoms or signs were suggestive of lung disease the appointed doctor would almost certainly refer the employee back to their own GP or to a chest specialist.

This medical assessment is performed by our GMC Registered and HSE Appointed Doctors at Just Health clinics.
Employees doing licensed asbestos work must have a medical no more than two years before starting work with asbestos and every two years after this if they continue to work with asbestos. Non Licensed Asbestos Medicals are carried out every three years,
At the end of the examination two copies of an original HSE certificate will be issued, one copy will be given to the employee and one copy will be sent to the employer. The employer will not be sent any confidential details of the employee’s medical record. Health records must be kept for at least 40 years.
